BARTON HARTSHORN SHARES NEW SINGLE “LISTEN FOR A CHANGE” FULL ALBUM, NOT WHAT I EXPECTED TO HOPE FOR, DUE OUT ON SUXEED MUSIC ON APRIL 23 DISTRIBUTED BY BFD/THE ORCHARD
Paris, France: Should we really be surprised at all that the French have beat us to punch in extolling the virtues of a true indie pop auteur/songsmith? Barton Hartshorn has joined the queue along with Scott Walker, Bowie, Nik Kershaw, Neil Hannon and arguably countless others whose confections have been noticed across the channel first. Stepping into this album cycle with 2 Rolling Stone France pieces already under his belt, Hartshorn is primed to take on the rest of the galaxy, which of course, includes the states.
Firstly, worth mentioning is a new single, “Listen For A Change,” already released in Barton’s native UK to kind words and a variety of accolades. The song is Roxy Music, pre-Avalon, a bit of Prefab, a dash of Television Personalities and perhaps a smidge of Weller, post-Style Council as Hartshorn is on the slightly rougher side of New Romantic tracks. You get at least some of the picture. Anyone with a heart and a predisposition to smart aleck britpop will fall all over this particular tune…
But wait, there’s more where that came from. Meaning, there will be a full album in the offing come April 23rd. It is called Not What I Expected To Hope For, and it is set for release on Suxeed Music through BFD/The Orchard. Produced by Barton himself and Vincent Guibert, it betrays a sizable palette of moods and textures, from the upbeat DNA of the aforementioned single to more melancholic, and then lush strains. Overall, you can expect a body of work melodious enough to stick to your grey matter for a while.

”A celebration of the very best of English Pop/folk with the added bonus of a superb voice and heartfelt storytelling. XTC-like flights of fancy, the ironic bite of Elvis Costello and even a dash of Robert Palmer soul; Barton has the imagination of a novelist and the whole album courses with a subtle folk undertone that makes this a truly singular work.” -BenZine
“A heady bouquet driven by inspired storytelling. Worthy of XTC & the best of wings era McCartney.” -Paris Move
“Pure class and an abundance of energy. Musicians from Stockholm to Marseille would give their right arm and a kidney to produce a masterpiece of this calibre. Barton Hartshorn is a master of his art.” -SongAZine
“A perfect production that showcases Barton's slightly frayed, crooner-like voice. The album flows like a collection of short stories…” -My Head Is A Jukebox
“A resounding success!” -What The France
